What determines the price of a heavy haulage semi-trailer?
Heavy haulage semi-trailers have no single list price — the specification sets it. The biggest drivers are payload and the resulting axle count, the trailer type (lowbed, detachable-gooseneck low loader, extendable platform), chassis steel and tare weight, the steering and suspension system, extensions and equipment, corrosion protection and the delivery terms (shipping, documents, place of delivery). When comparing two quotes, first check that they price the same specification, then look beyond the purchase price to the total cost over the trailer’s working life.
1. Payload and axle count
The decision that moves the price most is how many tonnes the trailer must carry. More payload means more axles, and every extra axle line adds axles, tyres, rims, brake and suspension components and a longer, stronger chassis.
| Trailer axles | Typical payload | Typical cargo |
|---|---|---|
| 5 axles | 40 – 60 t | Mid-to-heavy construction machinery: crawler excavators, wheel loaders. Usually pulled by a 3-axle tractor. |
| 6 axles and more | 60 – 100 t | Heavier, bulkier industrial loads; spreading the weight over more axles is needed to stay within bridge and legal limits. |
2. Trailer type and chassis design
Even at the same payload, trailer type changes the price because each type solves a different engineering problem.
3. Steel grade and tare weight
High-yield steels such as S700MC and Strenx® 700/960 cost more per kilogram but deliver the same strength with a lighter chassis. Lower tare means more payload within the legal gross weight, so a higher purchase price can be recovered through the extra cargo carried on every trip.
4. Steering system
Steering is a route decision, not a comfort feature — and a significant price item.
5. Suspension
Suspension decides how the load is spread over the axles and what ground the trailer can work on.
6. Extensions and special equipment
Every option adds both price and tare. Specify only the equipment you will use regularly.
7. Component brands: axles, brakes, tyres, lighting
Two trailers that look alike are priced differently because of the components inside. These items affect breakdown, downtime and spare-part costs more than the purchase price.
8. Corrosion protection
Surface protection directly affects service life and resale value.
9. Documents and registration
A trailer you cannot register is a trailer you cannot use, however good the price. Settle documentation at quotation stage, not at delivery.
10. Delivery terms, shipping and lead time
Two prices for the same trailer cannot be compared if the delivery terms differ. The Incoterms rule in the quote decides who pays for transport and insurance and who carries the risk.
Total cost, not purchase price
The lowest quote is not always the lowest cost. A heavy haulage trailer works for many years, so these items can matter more than the purchase price:
Checklist for comparing quotes
Before putting quotes from different manufacturers side by side, make sure every item is stated explicitly.
| Item | What the quote should state explicitly |
|---|---|
| Axles | Brand, number of axles and rated capacity per axle (t) |
| Tare weight | Tare in kilograms and the accepted tolerance |
| Steel | Chassis steel grade (e.g. S700MC) and material certificate (EN 10204 3.1) |
| Steering | Fixed, self-steering or hydraulic forced steering; wireless remote included or not |
| Suspension | Air or hydraulic; stroke if hydraulic |
| Brakes and lighting | Braking system (e.g. WABCO EBS) and lighting equipment |
| Tyres | Brand, size and quantity; spare wheel included or not |
| Surface protection | Blasting standard (e.g. SA 2.5), metallization and paint system; length of the anti-rust warranty |
| Equipment | Ramps, extensions, wells, locks and lashing points listed one by one |
| Documents | EU WVTA, COC and any country-specific approvals |
| Delivery | Incoterms rule, place of delivery, insurance |
| Timing and terms | Delivery time, quote validity date, payment terms |
| Warranty | Scope, duration and spare parts availability |

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a lowbed semi-trailer cost?
There is no single price. A lowbed semi-trailer is priced on its specification: payload and axle count, gooseneck type, steel grade, steering and suspension system, extensions, equipment, corrosion protection and delivery terms. Send your cargo details, route and place of delivery and Yalcin Trailer prepares a quote for that specification.
Why can two semi-trailer quotes differ so much?
The quotes may be pricing different specifications: axle brand and capacity, steel grade and tare, steering type, surface protection, equipment list and delivery terms. An EXW (Ex Works) price, for example, cannot be compared with a DAP price that includes transport to your site. Match these items one by one before comparing.
Are more axles always more expensive?
Every extra axle line adds axles, tyres, brake and suspension components and a longer chassis, so it raises the purchase price. Axle count must still follow payload and the legal axle load limits on your route: typically 5 axles for 40-60 t and 6 or more axles for 60-100 t. Too few axles lead to overloading and permit problems.
Is hydraulic steering worth the extra cost?
If the trailer works on tight bends, in towns or at site entrances, hydraulic forced steering improves manoeuvrability and reduces tyre wear. For trailers with moderate axle counts that mostly run on open roads, self-steering axles can be sufficient.
Is metallization worth the extra cost?
It is worth considering for trailers exposed to road salt and kept for many years. Yalcin Trailer offers optional 85% zinc / 15% aluminium thermal spray metallization on the shot-blasted chassis with a 15-year anti-rust warranty. For trailers used for a short period or in dry climates, standard blasting and paint can be sufficient.
Are shipping and documents included in the price?
The delivery terms (Incoterms) in the quote decide whether transport is included: under EXW the trailer is handed over at the factory, under CIF or DAP the seller transports it to the named port or place. Yalcin Trailer vehicles are delivered with EU WVTA and COC documentation; confirm at quotation stage what is covered for registration and abnormal-load permits in the destination country.
What is the lead time?
Typical lead time is 6 to 10 weeks, depending on specification. For multi-axle or extendable designs that need custom engineering, the lead time is stated separately in the quote.
